Introduction

The University of Southern California (USC) is one of the few institutions of higher learning that have set themselves apart through research. The mission and vision statements of this University are a reflection of the reputation it has come to be known for – development of both individuals and society.

Having been in operation since 1880, USC is surely a pioneer of social changes not only in the U.S. but also at the global level. All these achievements are reflected in the mission and vision statement of this institution. While a corporate vision statement establishes the future position of a company, the mission statement identifies the activities that advance the company towards the achievement of this vision.

In the case of USC, both the mission and vision statement emphasize the leadership and research prowess of the institution when it comes to bringing change in people and societies. The core values of USC have also been critical in its continued success. They are the principles that ensure everyone contributes to its purpose and achievement of the mission and vision statements.

Mission Statement

USC’s mission statement is “development of human beings and society as a whole through the cultivation and enrichment of the human mind and spirit.” The statement underscores the consistent efforts of USC to initiate growth in societies through education and spiritual enrichment. This mission statement by USC has the following components:

  1. Enriching human mind and spirit
  2. Improving lives
  3. Improving communities

The first component represents the primary mandate of USC, which is to disseminate education as an institution of learning and research. The university offers a wide range of academic programs aimed at churning out graduates who can make a difference in society. In addition, USC values the stability of its students by imparting values and principles critical in their spiritual growth.

When it comes to the improvement of the lives of people, USC takes the lead in numerous ways including the promotion of health through its medical services. While all these activities add to the overall growth of the communities around USC, the institution goes further to promote other integrative and community empowering programs in Los Angeles, California.

Vision Statement

USC’s vision statement is “empowering students to transform the world.” The statement highlights the main duty that USC has complied with ever since its establishment as evidenced by its rich historical accounts.  This mission statement has the following components:

  1. Empowering students
  2. Transform the world

The value that USC places on its students is an indication of how progressive this university is, as well as its determination to bring out the best professionals in the world. The second component of this vision statement directly relates to the first one as the university trains its graduates to understand the current and future global issues and how to address them creatively and innovatively.

Core Values

USC’s core values comprise “engage, support, and educate.” These core values are exactly what has seen USC grow from an institution that a meager 53 students and about 10 members of staff to serving above 44, 000 students and thousands of members of staff today. In addition to this, the culture of this institution, as guided by its core values, has made it one of the top universities in the world.
