How Twitter’s Mission Has Evolved

Twitter has released a new strategic statement, which has users a tad bit confused. This new statement says: “Reach the largest daily audience in the world by connecting everyone to their world via our information sharing and distribution platform products and be one of the top revenue-generating Internet companies in the world.”

Compared to its previous mission statement: “To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.” Their new strategic statement seems a little inarticulate and has people wondering if a mission statement is important, since Twitter realized an increase in its stock price after a 220-character tweet on its new mission.

A Change in Its Tweet Structure

The idea behind Twitter when it was first launched was to provide a platform for friends to share messages like with SMS and to the public. There was also a limitation on the characters (influenced by the SMS limits of phones produced at the time), which restricted tweets to 140 characters.

The brief SMS structure made Twitter even more popular, as people found this feature appealing. However, the safety of this platform has been tampered with, and Tweets don’t seem as harmless as they used to be. Lots of recent tweets are aimed at promoting hate, inauthentic news, and cyber-bullying. Its anonymity features have also let people express their negativity, which kills the essence of the “freedom of speech mission.”

The shortcomings of Twitter have prompted its CEO, Jack Dorsey, to put more effort into labeling misleading, abusive, and illegal content to their best abilities.

On the brighter side, verified public figures now have easy access to the masses, as they share their plans and thoughts with them. Twitter is also gradually becoming an integral part of our lives, as it is slowly changing into a news outlet.  Regardless, Twitter still is the go-to platform for people who want to share their opinions and thoughts publicly.
